Introduction

For an immortal people in a time when power cannot always be wielded with impunity, status plays a vital role in day to day interactions. Often, in strongly Camarilla cities, there will be a respected few, known as the Harpies, who are considered arbiters of fashion, style and properiety. In those cities, it falls to those kindred to assign status. College Park, however, is a different situation entirely. Here, there can be no single arbiter of style and status. Instead, status in this city revolves around reputation.

Gaining Status

Well, that's all well and good, but that does beg the question: So how does one gain status? As mentioned before, status is really a measure of reputation in the city and, as such, allows all of the players to participate in the process. The system is relatively simple. At the end of every session, each player should decide if there were any characters in particular who caught his eye. In the post mortem, then, the player would list these people, the status trait he thought they earned, and a short reason why, like so:

Miguel the Brujah - Dependable (He came through for my character despite all odds)
Friedrich the Nosferatu - Untrustworthy (That bastard betrayed me!)
These comments should be made from your character's perspective - Status is an IC institution and is meant to represent the prevailing attitudes of characters and not playres. When enough people have given one character a particular status trait (we are flexible on the wording of that trait), that character will gain that trait permanently.

So, a summary of gaining status: vote for people you believe (in character) deserved status traits for their actions of that night. Sufficient votes from sufficient different people will earn the character that particular status trait. No, we are not telling you how many votes it is. Status is not a science.

Granting Status

The most common way to grant status is, of course, the system mentioned above. Sometimes, however, people become so well known in their particular sphere of reputation, however, that they become arbiters of that specific status. Someone who is extraordinarily respected for being trustworthy, for instance, will have his word taken on the trustworthiness of others. In terms of game mechanics, what this means is that when you get a certain number of votes above and beyond that necessary to give you a particular positive status trait, you become an arbiter of that trait. Depending on how widespread your reputation is, you will receive some number of positive and negative versions of that trait to give out as temporary status for that night.

So, basically, if you've gone past just having a particular positive status trait and are generally considered an epitome of that ideal, you will be able to convince other people that characters are on the positive or negative side of that status trait - thus, you will be able to give out temporary status.

Status Traits

Here are some possible status traits and descriptions. This not an exhaustive list and there are many other possibilities. Synonyms will generally be combined into one status trait - so if a person is voted 'cowardly', 'craven' and 'plumb yella', he will have received three votes for 'cowardly'.

  • Positive: Trustworthy, Promising, Generous, Brave, Admired, Famous, Faultless, Honorable, Just, Respected, Loyal
  • Negative: Diabolist, Oath-Breaker, Untrustworthy, Cowardly, Repugnant, Uncontrollable, Rude

Example

This system is new and potentially confusing, so here is an example of the process:

Heinrich the Tremere escapes death, one night, only through the heroic aid of Anselm the Gangrel. In his Post Mortem, Heinrich makes note of the following:

Anselm the Gangrel - Brave (He saved my life despite terrible odds)

In fact, Anselm's been helping a great many people out and, over time, several other people have instances where they note that Anselm is Brave and Heroic. Finally, the threshold is reached and the storytellers assign Anselm a permanent Brave status trait. A few sessions down the line, it turns out that even more people have been praising Anselm's bravery. So many people have done so, in fact, that Anselm is now considered an authority on courage. Every session, he is given one Brave and one Cowardly card to be given out as temporary status traits (ie. in existence for the duration of the night and no longer).
